floatio
“floatio” is an I/O device that is able to make any spherical object float.
In this exhibition, a model of an apple is used as the object. Newton discovered the concept of universal gravitation after watching a falling apple. This device, however, enables the apple to float and move upward .
It will not be so long before all things in daily life float, like the introduction of drones, so now is the time to imagine our life surrounded by floating objects. One of the characteristics of this phenomenon is lifelike movement. Floating objects can be perceived as moving automatically; therefore, they make us feel affection to them as if they are alive. The motion of floating gives life to each single object, resulting in a change in the relationship between objects and users.

Toshiya Yui was born in Suwa city, Nagano in 1993. He is at the Department of Intermedia Art and Science in the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, Waseda University. He is engaged in developing a TUI in the Tomoko Hashida Lab. Additionally, he belongs to the technology group “City & Dots,” and a product called “BUBBLY” was exhibited at SXSW in 2016. He was nominated for “The 22nd Campus Genius Award” and won top prize at the 6th Application Contest at Waseda University.

Tomohiro Yokota
横田 智大
Tomohiro Yokota was born in Hakodate city, Hokkaido in 1993 and grew up in Saitama. He is at the Department of Intermedia Art and Science in the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, Waseda University. He is engaged in research on extending the human body as an interface in the Tomoko Hashida Lab. He is looking for a way to make the interface more user-friendly. He was a finalist at the IVRC2014 and the Mashup Awards 2016 Student Category Awards.

Tomoko Hashida
橋田 朋子
Tomoko Hashida is an associate professor in the Department of Intermedia Art and Science at Waseda University in Japan. She received her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Information Studies from The University of Tokyo in 2009. Her main research interest is human computer interaction. She received the Best Paper Award from VRSJ, Innovative Technologies from METI, a Human Communication Award from IEICE, and an Excellence Award from ADAA, among others.
