SPACE EXPERIMENT #001, 002, 003
Rhizomatiks ArchitectureOur recognition was, that a case study should be conducted regarding the existing theory in the possibilities of physical architecture in means of space, by utilizing top-notch modern day technology. Rhizomatiks Architecture’s group of exhibits showcases what is possible in today’s spatial expression with the use of technology. With ‘View’, ‘Visual’, and ‘Sound’ as the 3 concepts, each is an experiential installation that may open a door to the relationships between space and physical, and space and media.

handiii / HACKberry
Genta Kondo + Hiroshi Yamaura + Tetsuya Konishi [exiii]handiii is a myoelectric prosthetic hand designed to offer flexibility and choice. Myoelectric bionic arms are prosthetics that people who have lost limbs can control intuitively through faint electrical signals (myoelectric) in the muscles, which are measured on the skin remaining on the arm. The technology has been around since prewar days but its extremely high cost has limited its penetration of the market. handiii uses a 3D printer and smartphone in order to keep the cost of the materials under 30,000 yen. Whereas previous bionic limbs would attempt to conceal the loss of the hand by imitating human skin in the design, handiii offers a choice of look to match the environment in which it is being used or the feelings of the user, just like a watch or sneakers. By adding extendibility through IC chips and microphones in the fingertips, handiii is a bionic arm that aspires to be the envy of a large number of people. It is currently being developed for commercialization in partnership with users.Roppongi Hills ‘MAT LAB’, Mori Tower 52F, TOKYO CITY VIEW -
the view[for LEXUS LF-LC]
Norimichi Hirakawa X LEXUSThe original of the visual program installation for LEXUS first appeared in Milano Salone 2007. In its recreation, the motif is the horizon.
The programming is very calculated, however, depending on the imagination of the viewer, artificial structures such as cities and streets and natural structures such as mountains, rivers and cliffs, are added to ‘The View’. Physical interaction with visitors has been deliberately disregarded with intention to bring focus to a purely aesthetic world in which computers and human imaginations function in synergy. What effect does a computer’s calculative ability have on our creativity or inventiveness? What does it inspire? Does the use of computers with incomparable abilities to 8 years ago allow us to discover ‘what truly is’?

The Mirror
Naotaka Fujii + GRINDER-MAN + EVALAWhat is the self?
Immersive experience art piece "The Mirror" asks relation between the self and the body.
A participant, wearing a head mounted display and headphones, interacts with his/her mirror image displayed on the screen in front. Timeline of the mirror image jumps from now to past back and forth so that the participant starts losing 'here and now’ feeling. And feeling an existence of others who don't actually exist guides us to reconstruct a novel structure of the self and the body.Roppongi Hills ‘MAT LAB’, Mori Tower 52F, TOKYO CITY VIEWROPPONGI HILLS-MORI ARTS CENTER GALLERY (52) -
Rez Infinite -Synesthesia Suit
Tetsuya Mizuguchi + Rhizomatiks Architecture + Keio Media DesignThe “Synesthesia Suit” was created to embody the multi-sensory concept behind the VR (virtual reality) video game “Rez Infinite”. The 26 actuators placed within the suit vibrate throughout the person’s body along with the music and simultaneously light up via LED. There is an element of texture to the vibrations — whether it be the feeling of stringed instruments or drums being played — to which the LED colors and light patterns synchronize as the game progresses. This multimodal suit allows the person to experience music not just through its ears but also through the senses of touch and sight.
For this exhibit, the space has been designed to extend these multimodal senses of the “Synesthesia Suit” (lights, vibrations) into the area. It is also an experiment to simulate the full body VR experience in the space.Roppongi Hills ‘MAT LAB’, Mori Tower 52F, TOKYO CITY VIEW -
The (anywhere) syndrome / earth hole
EUGENE KANGAWAGetting a hole on the earth.
The power of imagination penetrates into the closed space.
In the spring several years ago, the starry sky I looked up at off-limits area left me a compelling expression.
No one lives there, yet I found this place is contiguous even it was seemingly isolated.
/Descending forever with gravity ― this is a new image of motion.
The China Syndrome,1979/
“Earth Hole” is a video installation in which the screen showing “the scenery from the antipodes“ is embedded in the venue where natural environment is reproduced. The viewers will see the starlit heaven at day time and brightening blue sky in evening twilight as if they peer down the hole. This surrealistic and hopeful juxtaposition will give the audiences a mystic experience and evoke curiosity and imagination.Roppongi Hills ‘MAT LAB’, Mori Tower 52F, TOKYO CITY VIEW -
Light of Birth
WOW / Nobumichi Asai‘Light of Birth’ is a holographic art utilizing lasers and mist generators.
When numerous light sources are directed toward a single point, the point illuminates brighter than its surroundings. This may sound simple, but there is a fundamental idea. In nature, light diffuses 360° off of every object that meets our eye, and the hologram creates a similar environment. The notion that an object of light exists in space conjures up an image of a ‘substance’ being born. It is a calibration of both computer and actual space coordination systems. We figured this out when we created ‘Real-time Face Tracking & Projection—OMOTE’. Highly advanced technologies such as AR, VR, and 3D Printers are also in relation to the idea. What is interesting, is they all use open source codes like OpenCV. Nature’s written codes (laws) ‘creating’ the Real World. We may detect Plato’s ‘Theory of Forms’ here. In full awareness that we may be trespassing on holy ground, we dare to replace the words of the Bible ‘In the beginning was the Word’ to ‘In the beginning was the Code’.Roppongi Hills ‘MAT LAB’, Mori Tower 52F, TOKYO CITY VIEW -
MOON PARKA with SANSUI
THE NORTH FACE X Spiber with EUGENE KANGAWAThe art piece behind the historical presentation.
The shape of communion of the future.
In October 2015, Spiber Inc. and THE NORTH FACE (Goldwin Inc.) announced the joint R&D project of next-generation protein materials at SPACE O in Omotesando Hills.
This project has started by Spiber Inc., a Yamagata biotech firm appointed governmental project and THE NORTH FACE, largest outdoor product company.
Spider silk had been considered to be an unattainable goal and called dream material, however, we turned synthetic spider silk materials into the outerwear jacket, MOON PARKA by the latest technology. (This was the world's first prototype made from artificial protein material on an actual manufacturing line. )
MOON PARKA is the embodiment of the latest technology ― the key visual of the greatest innovation in the history of materials was “SANSUI”, a monochrome video work created by a contemporary artist, EUGENE KANGAWA who exhibit ”Syndrome/Earth Hole” in this event.
“SANSUI” is a video work that KANGAWAt captured magnificent scenery of the mid-winter mountains in Tohoku, accordingly to the script of “the pilgrimage route of the mountain worship that once existed” which the artist determined through conversation he had with the monk in there.
By connecting the two brutal midwinter mountains in north, Mount Choukai and Mount Gassan (according to folklore, known as mountain of the sun and mountain of the moon respectively), with a straight line, he saw compelling images of the monochrome world in which snow mountain, whirling rivers, breathtaking waterfalls, immense forests, expansive earth and endless sky circulate.
The footage, attained through near-ascetic physical hardships portrays a tranquil and contemplative experience in outstanding resolution.
Perhaps, this is the image which was in the eye of monk of mountain worship that once have existed.
After the concept phase of this work, the joint work of Spiber Inc. who is located in Tsuruoka city and Goldwin Inc. who is embraced the nature was started. Also the moon in the night sky from the first scene of the footage was employed as the key image of MOON PARKA. This compelling image was also used at the press conference and represented majestic beautiful nature as the symbol of next-generation sustainable materials. This triadic relationship was underscored by this high sympathy.
This collaboration is the new figure of the interrelation between creativity and business that goes beyond the realm of expression and cross over the boundary of art and business.Roppongi Hills ‘MAT LAB’, Mori Tower 52F, TOKYO CITY VIEW -

Everything is as it is
Douglas Diaz + Rhizomatiks ArchitectureLetting go of my desire to create artificial connections between things and events, I get closer to accepting reality. Letting go of my preconceptions, I am able to surrender to the reality of life. In that acceptance and surrender, I am able to experience life for what it is: everything is as it is.
The drawings on display focus on experiencing the reality of life: the undeniability that nothing exist outside of the present moment, the now.
The analog drawing is a direct expression of the moment and the digital output is a comprehensive map that reveals how I experience the reality of life. Through various digital input devices that capture my movement, focus and concentration, Rhizomatiks will translate this information into a temporal spatial map of this journey in real time.Roppongi Hills, West Walk 2F, Temporary Barricade -
White Rain for LEXUS
Takahiro Matsuo(LUCENT)‘White Rain for LEXUS’ is an interactive light installation inspired by the LEXUS automobile gliding through rain.
The meteor shower-like ‘White Rain’ reflecting off the body of the car, its sequence transforming endlessly in real-time motion lighting, gives the GS F’s glossy body an unparalleled sparkle.
By controlling the holographic display projected into space, visitors are visually able to experience the effect of light as ‘White Rain’ falls in synchronicity with their movements. The high performance of the GS F, in conformity with the ‘F’ philosophy, and the interactive character of the innovative exhibit brings about a fresh impression to the sense of unity born by the vehicle’s readiness to respond to the driver’s will and the exhilaration of being in charge of a sports sedan.INTERSECT BY LEXUS-TOKYO 1F GARAGE -

Shadowing
Chomko & RosierAs the sun sets and the street lights come on, traces of those who've passed under the lights are played throughout the city, re-animating the streets. Shadowing invites interaction between people who share a space. This could be as simple as walking together or more complex gestures could occur - a wave hello, a hop, or a dance. While you interact or react to the shadow your movements are recorded, leaving your shadow for the next visitor. Shadowing explores the disconnectedness that technology can create between strangers, the role of light in creating a city's character, and the unseen data layers and surveillance culture that pervades our contemporary urban spaces.
Winner of Watershed's 2014 Playable City Award, Shadowing was first installed in eight locations around Bristol in 2014. Shadowing took part in the 'Illuminating York 2015' festival, and was nominated by Sebastian Conran as one of the 'Designs of the Year 2015’ and is being exhibited at the London Design Museum until March 2016.Toranomon HillsToranomon Hills -
