MAT Lab.MAT Lab.は国内外及び表現カテゴリーに捕われず活躍するビジュアルデザインスタジオ「WOW」と、現代美術家・名和晃平率いるクリエイティブプラットフォーム「SANDWICH」の共同オープンラボプロジェクト。WOW/SANDWICHがMAT2015メイン会場である森美術館チケット売り場をゲリラ占拠し、互いのオフィスをその場に移築し、日常的な業務作業を観客の目の前で行う。MAT Lab.はテクノロジードリブン中心の国内メディアアートとは別に、コンセプトドリブンな表現を重視しするWOWとSANDWICHの意気投合により実現したプロジェクトであり、デザインから現代美術への挑戦を踏み出すWOWと現代美術から建築デザインの領域へ大きく踏み出したSANDWICHのクロスオーバーなコラボレーションの出発点であり、デザインと現代美術の新たな融合の方向へ向かうプロジェクトである。観客は作り手の日常的な制作プロセス、作業、打ち合せを観覧する事で、日々表現者が何を考え、どの様に作業し、なぜ制作し続けるかという熱量を感じ取り、表現の先にある大望(Ambition)を見渡してもらう。

MAT Lab.“MAT Lab.” is a collaborative open office project between WOW—a visual design studio that works in a variety of media in locations around the world—and SANDWICH—a creative space run by contemporary artist Kohei Nawa. For MAT2015, WOW and SANDWICH will take over the event’s main venue, Mori Art Museum, and relocate their offices there to perform their daily routines in front of visitors.While much Japanese media art is technology-driven, WOW and SANDWICH focus on more concept-driven forms of expression. This is what brought them together in “MAT Lab.,” an experiment that will see both collectives cross over into each others’ territory—from design to contemporary art for WOW, and contemporary art to architectural design for SANDWICH—and present a new way of fusing the two genres.By observing the production processes, work, and meetings that take place in the two offices on a daily basis, visitors will be able to better understand the ambition that drives creative professionals—what they think about every day, how they work, and why they continue creating.




WOW is a visual design studio based in Tokyo, Sendai and London. We are involved in a wide field of design from advertising and commercial works to installation works for exhibition spaces, and also invent new user interface designs for prominent brand names. We are also very passionate about creating original art works, holding exhibitions not only in Japan but also internationally. We are continuously discovering the tremendous possibilities of visual design, and the visual designs that are useful for society bring out the best talents of each artist and designer.

名和 晃平 / Kohei NAWA

名和 晃平 / Kohei NAWA

Born in 1975. Sculptor and an assistant professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Director of “SANDWICH,” a creative platform for production established in 2009 in Fushimi, Kyoto. In 2011, his solo exhibition was taken place at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT). In 2013, he joins to Setouchi Triennale and Aichi Triennale after accomplishing his successful project “Manifold”, a large scale public art exhibited permanently in Cheonan, Korea. Having unique concept of PixCell as an axis, his works continue to unfold expressions in diversity. Currently based in Kyoto.



In 2009, it started off as a creative platform by renovating an old sandwich factory facilitated as art studio and a residential space. Consists of 40 members in teams such as “PRODUCTION” to implement ideas, “OFFICE” to undertake the management, “ARCHITECTURE” and “GRAPHIC” to work together within the network in diverse that develops liberal and dynamic collaborations. It is also a unique education system providing students of Kyoto University of Art and Design and internships of domestic and overseas to join many ongoing projects.
